New year, new Nonprofit Spotlight, and this month we want to shine a light on the tireless community-building efforts of the folks at Project Boon. They bring together neighbors, businesses and whole communities while addressing food insecurity impacting local families.

Our company’s founder, Ruth, had the opportunity to hear Project Boon’s founder Chris Suchánek speak a lunch for local business owners, and she was inspired by his authenticity and his passion for making an impact on his community, for making life better for others.

Since starting the nonprofit with his wife, Ana Karina, in 2011, they have created opportunities for volunteers to give over 40,000 hours of their time, enabling businesses to give back to their communities through group volunteer days and donations/ sponsorships. They host multiple health and resource events each year, providing groceries, meals, backpacks full of school supplies, and toys as well as haircuts, flu shots and dental and eye exams.

They’ve served over 220,000 meals! In just 2022 alone, they gave away 2,000 backpacks of supplies!

We love the emphasis they place on getting local business owners to promote and support volunteering among their employees and of course themselves! By encouraging everyone to get more involved in their local communities, the wise folks at Project Boon are fostering deeper connections in every direction. What’s more, they are tapping into a great resource that exists in every community- people who are just waiting to be asked to help!

How can you encourage the people around you to volunteer? Well, you can take a page from Project Boon and first model the behavior you want to see, and then create well-supported opportunities for others to participate!
