“The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by human beings for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls which imprison people because they are different from others.”

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Though we normally keep the tone light and apolitical in our weekly Moments of Bliss, we wanted to honor the legacy of Dr. King by noting his focus on voting rights as a way ensure equality. Our country today faces many of the same issues as it did in his time, and his words are often used by folks on all points of the political spectrum to bolster their arguments.

This post is not about that, however. Instead, we want to focus our attention on organizations that are supporting voters and voter registration efforts all across the country. We’ve done it before, in our post from October 2020: “Sharing Humanity One Slice At A Time” about the non-profit Pizza To The Polls which aims to bring food and water to voters waiting in long lines to be heard.

For Pizza, supporting voting rights means acting on a national scale and going to where the need is at any given moment. For other organizations, support means acting locally and incrementally. Another nonprofit we’d like to highlight is Spread The Vote, a grassroots nonprofit focused on helping people obtain IDs in states with voter ID laws.

However you choose to get involved in supporting voting rights, remember another of Dr. King’s many quotes:

The time is always right to do what is right.”
