The love shown to Statler the geriatric bat by his handlers at Bat World Sanctuary, as they “fly” him around the room and let him gorge on fruit salad, is as heart-warming as it is affirming: we are all worthy of love, the message says.

This time of year, with Valentine’s Day around the corner, we are inundated and often overwhelmed with messages about romantic love. Though recent trends include Galentine’s Day (platonic love) and a heavy emphasis on self-care (self love), it’s impossible to deny the ever-present shadow of Cupid and his heart-piercing arrows.

As we wrote about in a previous Moment of Bliss, Holidays for the Heart, we believe that you don’t need a special occasion to show someone how much they mean to you, and that there’s no time like the present to express your feelings in whatever form that might take for you. Not everyone responds to flowers and chocolates the same way, so figuring out what your love language is (and that of the person you love) will help you zero in on the ways you prefer to show and receive affection. You might be surprised by what you discover.

If we all take the time to show our love to our loved ones, consistently and genuinely, the world will be better for it.
