The humble public library is a staple of American life, and one library in New Orleans located in a former mansion sets the bar for luxury libraries.

In honor of this week’s Mardi Gras celebrations, our weekly feel-good Moment of Bliss turns to the Big Easy and one of its lovely libraries.

The Milton H. Latter Memorial Library is a converted Italianate–beaux arts estate set among other mansions, private ones, on the city’s historic St. Charles Avenue. Guests to the library can browse books that are stacked next to art and antiques while the first floor formal rooms have been converted to reading rooms.

It was built in 1907, and at one point was the home of silent film star Marguerite Clark. It was given to the city for use as a library in 1948.

We at Bliss Auctions love libraries, as we’ve written about before in A Boy & His Book and Loving The Library. We hope that your own local library is a great resource to you and your community!
