Reading is a crucial tool/ habit/ activity for any one interested in learning/ exploring/ growing. It touches on all areas of human life, from education to entertainment. We need to read if we want to follow a recipe or travel to a new place. Many people have to read things for work or school, but everyone has the option of reading things for leisure and pleasure.
A local library can be a fantastic resource for reading material, of course, but it can also be a resource in other ways. The Los Angeles Public Library branches, for example have computers that are free to use as well as wifi, as well as workshops for kids and for adults on a variety of topics. The central branch even has a Makerspace called the Octavia Lab that card-holders can sign up to use. During the peak of the pandemic, The Lab pivoted to produce face shields for first responders.
Local lending libraries, once in the form of Book Mobiles and these days more often than not Little Free Libraries*, are often smaller scale resources run by one person or family, or a small group. The goal is the same, whatever the form: to share freely books and the stories within them with anyone who wants them.
*Some folks have taken their LFLs even further, using them as a platform to share goods or even art with their communities, as we wrote about in a previous Moment of Bliss post, Jeepers Creepers Where’d You Get Those Peepers?
