Our previous Moment of Bliss post, Loving the Library, was, as the title suggests, all about how great libraries are- the sharing of knowledge, the community support, the resources. This time, we want to shine a light on a few wonderful bookstores in other parts of the world, because reading is such a universal pastime. Bookstores play a crucial role alongside libraries in giving people access to books and media, and here are two we’d love to visit someday.
Otis & Clementine’s Books & Coffee in Nova Scotia, Canada, is as close to our dream location as it gets: rescue cats and books? Yes, please!!! The felines are provided to the store by a local nonprofit rescue group, South Paw Conservation Nova Scotia and the humans can browse the shelves for reading material or a new furry companion, or both!
An absolute wonder of design, the Dujiangyan Zhongshuge bookstore in China’s Sichuan province opened in late 2020 and set a new global standard for how epic a bookstore can be. 80,000 books fill the shelves, columns and archways and are infinitely reflected by the carefully positioned mirrors to achieve the vision of designer Li Xiang, founder of Chinese architecture firm X+Living.
