ARTivism, as taught and practiced by the nonprofit RuckusRoots, is using art to inspire powerful positive change in the world.
This month we’re focusing our Nonprofit Spotlight on RuckusRoots, a Los Angeles based nonprofit that was founded by Christine Spehar after she had several discouraging experiences while volunteering for other environmental groups. She wanted a way to engage and connect with the public that was both fun and impactful. After the first pilot TRASHformation program in 2010, RuckusRoots was launched in 2011 and has since converted over 25,000 pieces of trash into artworks. They have several different programs that work with schools and communities all over Los Angeles, with a focus on underrepresented communities.
By offering an interactive and creative experience working with upcycled materials, RR makes it possible for participants to transform from apathetic bystanders to engaged and inspired activists who have a strong environmental awareness and feel empowered to get involved. They are activating the next generation, planting seeds for a future that is more sustainable, eco-focused and beautiful.
