In a city that depends heavily on the film industry for employment, the current strikes are both necessary and potentially devastating to the folks who were already having trouble making ends meet. The nonprofit World Harvest Food Bank recently started offering free groceries for members of the two unions in an incredible act of solidarity.

Too many people are faced with the awful choice between rent and food, and even prior to the strikes, World Harvest has offered people the opportunity to receive an entire shopping cart of groceries for $55 or 4 hours of volunteering. That affordable/ feasible option has helped them to provide nutritious food to over 500,000 individuals and 75,000 families. They work with major grocery chains and food distributors to help divert food that would otherwise go to waste.

Not only are they helping the people of Los Angeles, they are also helping the planet by reducing waste! For more than 15 years, founder Glen Curado and his staff have partnered with other nonprofits, mutual aid groups and government groups to address the problems of food insecurity and food waste.

Consider donating to this wonderful organization to help them continue their mission, or donate to your own local food bank. At the end of the day, we’ve got to take care of each other.
