When we set out to do a new task, sometimes we forget to look around us for the resources we might need to accomplish it.  One man in his village in Malawi used items he had on hand to help improve his own life, and the lives of those around him. Colrerd Nkosi used his ingenuity and curiosity to develop a water power system for his house and neighbors. After a few trials and errors, he managed to create power for six homes from an old refrigerator compressor. But he wasn’t done there: Nkosi is working to build out his power system to be able to provide power to over 1000 homes in his area. With only 11% of the population in his area having regular access to power, this will help many people.

What can we learn from Nkosi? He is driven by ingenuity and curiosity, and that allows him to solve problems creatively. We should look at the world and tools around us and try to find ways to use those tools to solve the problems we have. Perhaps our turbine is just waiting in a closet somewhere. We can also learn from his generosity- by giving power to his neighbors for free, he is undeniably improving their lives. Many times our large donors are the power that lights up our organizations, and that leads us to the eternal question: how can we leverage our resources to impact more people?
