A smiley surprise awaits drivers on Oregon 18 every fall.

In rural Polk County, Oregon, drivers travelling along Hwy 18 will encounter this delightful installation- a giant smiley face- designed and planted by Hampton Lumber in 2011. It appears every fall when the larch trees’ needles change color to yellow-orange while the douglas fir trees- the eyes and the smile- stay evergreen.

This type of landscape art takes a lot of patience on the part of the artist because of the time they will have to wait to see the fruits of their labor. But their patience is rewarded with a spectacular display of beauty and joy.
