If you like checking things off of your to-do list, then you know how great it feels when you get to check off a Big Task. I don’t mean the every day tasks, either, I mean the Big Tasks that sometimes loom overhead not getting done because the every day tasks can fill up our time pretty easily. Carving out time to accomplish a Big Task takes consistent effort to chip away at what needs doing.
One of my favorite authors, Sir Terry Pratchett, once described the act of writing as building a wall, in that you accomplish it by laying bricks day after day until it’s done. In some ways, that might come off as unromantic coming from a favorite author, and it is. The hard work of getting things done is often unromantic, unglamorous, practical and, occasionally, downright tedious.
For some, the sweetness comes when the Big Task is officially done and can be checked off the list. For others, the sweetness is found along the way, knowing the work is getting done and progress is being made even when we can’t see it. It doesn’t matter which type you are as long as you channel this baby crab and just keep plugging away on that strawberry.
