Continuing our New Year’s theme of finding the bright spots of the past year, we here at Bliss want to focus this month’s nonprofit Spotlight on to the incredible work being done by Ocean Clean Up and their various projects aimed at sustainably and effective removing trash from our planet’s oceans.
Founded in 2013 by a then-18 year old Dutch inventor named Boyan Slat, the nonprofit has a mission to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. They are so committed to this cause that they even state,
“Our aim is to put ourselves out of business once the oceans are clean.”
Having just spent several days driving along the gorgeous California central coast, we are in awe of the ocean and are humbled at the thought of its immensity. The challenge of cleaning it is and keeping it clean is a mountain of a task and it’s a wonderful thing that Ocean Clean Up is taking it on.
We decided to include a second video in this post, as you can see below, that explores the technology behind the river-based clean up machines, cleverly named The Interceptor. Boyan Slat teamed up with YouTube star Mark Rober to raise more funds to scale up the efforts. We love everything about this: the collaboration, the innovation and out-of-the-box thinking, and of course the passion to solve this global problem, no matter the obstacles.
