A tour of the greenhouse at the Phoenix House Earthship

Two years ago today, Bliss Auctions co-founders Ruth and Michael discovered their happy place at the Phoenix House, located outside of Taos, NM in the Greater World Earthship community, which is a neighborhood made up entirely of Earthship Biotecture dwellings.

Earthships are designed to be self-sustaining, off-grid eco-living at its finest. Built with literal earth and recycled materials, they feature solar energy and water reclamation to create a micro-climate in the high desert. The house that we stayed in included a large greenhouse with birds and a fishpond.

While not everyone can have an Earthship for everyday living (earthquake-prone areas might have building codes that makes them impractical, for example), one can daydream of a vacation away from it all in a place that takes “trash” and turns it into beautiful, livable art.

And, at this especially intense moment in time, I think we can all use a mental visit to our Happy Place. What’s yours?
